Sayo grew up in north west Japan surrounded by beautiful mountains. Her dad, a Buddhist priest, always taught her to appreciate people and things around her. She grew up living in her father's temple in a traditional family. She learned that even Japan had very unique and different cultures, lifestyles and languages when she moved to Osaka. It made her more interested in understanding another world by meeting people and seeing environment.
She experienced living in North Finland as a intern when she was 22 before moving back to Japan to become special education teacher. While she was in Finland she noticed how naturally brands like Marimekko and Aarikka fit into people’s lifestyle in their home, school and work. She saw that Finnish women were independent and had good balance in their life and shined with a positive confidence. It was very natural for them to have free time after work or even when taking care of their family. They they were active, expressing their individuality riding horses through snowy fields, fishing on a frozen lake, taking a sauna in the snow or just relaxing in front of fire after work. The lifestyle of Finnish women inspired Sayo with an image of natural beauty, balance in life and being true to yourself.
